I Do Not Have to Know Who You Are 2023
Medium: Interactive Performance
Materials: Tape, Fabric, Cotton, Wire, Pen, Fake Egg
Size: 160*120cm
This interactive performance features my standing in a public square with a human-scale uterus sculpture, a piece inspired by my personal experience with cyberbullying. The artwork was originally uploaded to various social media platforms, where it faced mixed reactions—some platforms banned the project, while others became spaces for targeted harassment and cyberbullying.
The uterus sculpture is designed with a zippered pocket, emphasizing the containing function. Inside the sculpture, I placed artificial egg to symbolize female egg. I invited people to write comments or thoughts about female stereotypes on these eggs, reflecting the societal expectations and burdens imposed on women to highlight the dual weight carried by the person holding the uterus sculpture—not only the biological and physical weight of the organ but also the additional societal pressures, responsibilities, and sorrows tied to womanhood.
I transcribed hateful comments onto strips of tape and incorporated them into the performance. Audiences are encouraged to read these comments and engage directly with the reality of online gendered violence. By making these private attacks public, the work transforms personal pain into collective awareness, challenging viewers to confront and question the pervasive nature of misogyny in both digital and physical spaces.
